Beyond Words: The Craftsmanship of Communication
When a digital product has been completed it needs to be remembered for its soul, not the bells and whistles of the technology tools. Bernajean Porter, DigiTales: The Art of Telling Digital Stories.

Participants will be challenged to create more than a literal connection to the Frost poem, Road Not Traveled, by stretching to uncover a metaphorical story of their own using the larger theme of "challenges" that have had an impact on their lives. A visual storytelling, ultimately expressing a clear sensory experience of their own personal story - showing NOT telling, will reflect a choice/ decision in their lives, the emotions behind it, and the lesson learned culminating in a 3-4 min video! Creativity, engagement, and deep introspection into sharing something real from their lives will guide the learning curves with new mediums for expression and representation of understandings.

Provincial ELA From Here to There Chart - Moving ELA into New Visions for Living and Learning in a Digital World
Take inventory! As curriculum is refreshed to meet growing needs for new competencies for living and learning in a digital world, how are you doing with activating these in your classrooms? What are you willing to target in order to bring new possibilities to your students learning environments? Which items are you doing well with making happen now - that you might inspire others to put into practice? It is an ongoing journey to refresh your professional skills and practices - go slow - go fast but parking in "what has been" rather than mobilizing into "what is to be" leaves students unprepared and at a disadvantage for their own futures. Take the challenge of making IT happen!

    ...
Media literacy is a core communication competency essential for the digital world of work and learning glutted with facts and information! Media literacy is considered a repertoire of competences that enable people to analyze, evaluate, and create messages in a wide variety of media modes, genres, and forms. It enables people to contribute to an expanded conceptualization of literacy, treating mass media, popular culture and all forms digital media as new types of 'texts' - increasing influence and impact power. Media literate people should be skillful creators and producers of media messages, both to facilitate understanding of the specific qualities of each medium, as well as to create independent media and participate as active citizens.
Education for media literacies often uses an inquiry-based pedagogic model. Through thinking, learning and communicating with digital mediums, students rehearse becoming meaning-makers first and then media-makers. Each medium (e.g. visual storytelling, podcasting, webs, videos, slides and graphic novels) has a fluency and a grammar to maximize their influence power - this "literacy" requires practice and mastery to purposefully increase an individual's communication power buiildingh capacity for artful designing of information into illuminated understandings. Communication power is about commanding ATTENTION - not making digital media products.
